Kill Team — Skirmish Warfare in the 41st Millennium

Kill Team is Games Workshop's fast-paced skirmish game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe — but unlike the grand army battles of 40k, Kill Team is fought in the shadows. Small specialist teams of 6–12 operatives move through claustrophobic terrain, hunting each other in corridors, ruins and industrial complexes across the galaxy. Every operative is an individual with their own name, role and abilities. Every decision matters. There are no expendable units.

At Colours of Warriors, we stock the full Kill Team range — the Hivestorm launch box, Starter Set, Core Book, individual team boxes and terrain sets. Visit our store in Pilsen, Czech Republic, or order online with delivery across the EU.

What Is Kill Team?

Kill Team is a two-player skirmish game where each player commands a small team of specialist operatives. Rather than moving entire units at once, each operative activates individually — creating a dynamic, alternating game where both players are constantly engaged. Missions are played on densely populated terrain boards and typically completed in 60–90 minutes.

The current edition — Kill Team 3rd Edition, launched in October 2024 with the Hivestorm box — introduced a streamlined ruleset with a new three-part scoring system: the Crit Op (shared primary objective), Tac Op (secret secondary objective revealed on completion) and Kill Op (score for eliminating operatives). The result is a deeply tactical game that rewards both careful planning and adaptability.

Kill Teams — Who's In the Fight

Kill Team offers dozens of unique teams drawn from across the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Our current range includes:

Infernus Marines — elite Space Marines armed with flamers and melta weapons, specialists in close-range devastation. Included in the Hivestorm launch box.

Fellgor Ravagers — twisted Chaos-corrupted Beastmen, savage and unpredictable close-combat specialists. Also included in the Hivestorm box.

Legionaries — Chaos Space Marine veterans, heavily armoured and individually powerful. One of the most flexible teams in the game with extensive equipment options.

Terminators — elite Space Marine warriors in Tactical Dreadnought Armour, slow but nearly unkillable. Each Terminator is a force multiplier that demands respect.

Death Korps of Krieg — grim trench warfare specialists of the Astra Militarum, masters of suppression and siege tactics with excellent long-range firepower.

Goremongers — Khornate berserkers who live for close combat, closing distances with terrifying speed.

Mandrakes — eldritch nightmares of the Drukhari, capable of phasing through walls and attacking from impossible angles. One of the most unique and visually striking teams in the game.

Exaction Squad — Adeptus Arbites riot suppression specialists, heavily armoured enforcers with powerful crowd control weapons.

Kasrkin — elite special forces of the Astra Militarum, highly trained operatives with excellent shooting profiles and versatile equipment options.

Novitiates — fanatical Sisters of Battle initiates, combining religious zeal with close-range firepower and powerful faith-based abilities.

Corsair Voidscarred — Aeldari void pirates, fast and unpredictable with exceptional mobility and a wide range of specialist weapons.

Brood Brothers — Genestealer Cult elite bodyguards, blending human soldiers with xenos enhancements for a disturbing effectiveness.

Farstalker Kinband — Kroot mercenaries and hunters, expert trackers with powerful ambush abilities and surprising resilience.

Vespid Stingwings — T'au auxilliary warriors with high mobility and unique anti-armour capabilities.

Ratlings — diminutive abhuman snipers of the Astra Militarum, expert marksmen who pick off targets from extreme range.

Hearthkyn Salvagers — tough and resourceful Leagues of Votann warriors, dwarfen space miners armed for war.

Nemesis Claw — Night Lords Chaos Space Marines, terror specialists who demoralise and isolate their prey before moving in for the kill.

How to Start Playing Kill Team

The best entry point is the Kill Team Starter Set — it contains two complete teams, terrain, a gaming mat and the core rules at an accessible price point. For a more complete experience, the Hivestorm launch box includes two full 3rd edition teams (Infernus Marines and Fellgor Ravagers), an extensive terrain set, the Core Book, gaming mat, dice and all tokens. Everything two players need in a single box.

The Core Book contains the complete rules, all mission types and reference material for all teams. Individual team boxes contain the miniatures and team-specific datacards — no additional purchases required to start playing with that team.

The basic rules are also available as a free download from the Games Workshop website, making Kill Team one of the most accessible entry points into the Warhammer hobby.

Kill Team vs Warhammer 40,000 — What's the Difference?

Kill Team and Warhammer 40,000 share the same universe, miniatures and lore — but they are very different games. 40k is army-scale: dozens to hundreds of models, 2–3 hour games, complex army building. Kill Team is intimate: 6–12 models per side, 60–90 minute games, no army list to build — just pick your team and play.

Kill Team miniatures are fully compatible with Warhammer 40,000 — many players use their Kill Team purchases as the nucleus of a 40k army, or use 40k models as Kill Team operatives. Kill Team is also an excellent first step into the 40k hobby for players who aren't ready to commit to a full army.

Terrain — Part of the Game

Terrain is not optional in Kill Team — it is a core part of the game. Dense, feature-rich terrain creates the claustrophobic environments where Kill Team comes alive: operatives using cover, squeezing through doorways, climbing ladders to gain vantage points. The Tomb World and Blood and Zeal boxed sets provide complete terrain environments for specific mission types and themes, in addition to the terrain included in the Hivestorm and Starter Set boxes.

The Hobby Side — Painting Kill Team Operatives

Kill Team is one of the most rewarding painting projects in the hobby precisely because of its small scale. With only 6–12 models to paint, each operative can receive individual attention — names, personal markings, battle damage and characterful details that would be impractical on a full 40k army.

Many players treat their Kill Team as a showcase project — a small group of models painted to a higher standard than they would achieve on a full army. The result is deeply personal and rewarding. We stock a full range of paints, brushes and modelling tools suited to Kill Team projects.

Frequently Asked Questions — Kill Team

What is Kill Team and how is it different from Warhammer 40,000?
Kill Team is a skirmish game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe — but instead of commanding an army, each player controls a small team of 6–12 specialist operatives. Games take 60–90 minutes rather than 2–3 hours, and there's no complex army building — just pick a team and play. The miniatures are fully compatible with Warhammer 40,000.

How many miniatures do I need to play Kill Team?
A standard Kill Team has 6–12 operatives depending on the faction. Most individual team boxes contain exactly what you need for a complete team. This makes Kill Team one of the most financially accessible Warhammer games — a single team box at approximately €50–60 provides everything needed to start playing.

What is the best starter set for Kill Team?
For two players starting together, the Hivestorm launch box provides the best complete experience — two full teams, extensive terrain, Core Book, gaming mat and all accessories. The Starter Set is a more affordable entry point with two teams and basic terrain.

Is Kill Team suitable for beginners?
Yes — Kill Team is one of the most beginner-friendly Warhammer games. The small model count makes assembly and painting accessible, the games are shorter than 40k and the rules are designed to be learned gradually. Kill Team is an excellent first Warhammer game for players who want to experience the 40k universe without committing to a full army.

Can I use Kill Team miniatures in Warhammer 40,000?
Yes — Kill Team miniatures are standard Warhammer 40,000 models fully compatible with 40k rules. Many players start with Kill Team and use their team as the nucleus of a growing 40k army. The investment in Kill Team is never wasted.

How long does a game of Kill Team take?
A standard game takes 60–90 minutes — significantly shorter than Warhammer 40,000. Kill Team is ideal for an evening game between two players, with time for a rematch if both players want one.
