What Makes Necromunda Different

Necromunda is first and foremost a campaign game — not a series of isolated battles but a connected narrative where your gang grows, suffers and evolves over many games. Between battles, fighters earn experience and develop new skills. Injuries are permanent — a fighter who takes a serious wound might lose an eye, develop a lasting injury or be forced into retirement. And when a fighter dies, they are gone forever.

This creates a level of emotional investment in individual models that no other Warhammer game matches. After a dozen games, your gang is genuinely your gang — a collection of survivors, veterans and rising stars with stories that developed at your table. No two Necromunda campaigns ever play out the same way.

The Gangs of the Underhive

Necromunda features a wide range of playable gangs, each representing a distinct faction in the hierarchy and criminal underworld of the hive:

House Escher — all-female gang of swift, lethal fighters armed with blade and chem weaponry. Fast, aggressive and deadly at close range, Escher gangs rely on speed and vicious melee to overwhelm opponents before they can react. Among the most popular and visually striking gangs in the game.

House Goliath — massive, muscle-bound brutes engineered for physical labour and combat. Goliath gangs are slow but extraordinarily tough, with powerful close-combat fighters and the intimidating Stimmers and Forge-born as elite options.

House Delaque — shadowy information brokers and spies with unsettling psychic abilities. Delaque gangs excel at manipulation, ambush and psychological warfare. Their pale, eyeless aesthetic is one of the most distinctive in the game.

House Cawdor — fanatical followers of the Redemptionist faith, ragged zealots armed with improvised weapons and explosive conviction. Numerous, expendable and burning with religious fervour — Cawdor reward aggressive, swarming tactics.

House Van Saar — the tech-masters of the Underhive, armed with the finest energy weapons and advanced equipment. Van Saar fighters are precision shooters who dominate at range, supported by Archeoteks and Grav-Cutters for elite options.

Ironhead Squat Prospectors — tough, stubborn duardin miners and prospectors who have carved out their own territory in the Underhive. Excellent durability and powerful mining equipment converted for combat make them a resilient and characterful gang.

Palanite Enforcers and Subjugators — the law in the Underhive, armed and armoured significantly better than most gangs. Enforcers play by different rules — literally — and offer a unique experience as the forces of order against the criminal gangs.

Beyond the main gangs, the range includes Spyre Hunters — elite noble hunters descending from the upper spire seeking sport — and a wide range of hired guns, bounty hunters and hangers-on that can join any gang for the right price.

How Necromunda Plays

Necromunda uses 28mm miniatures on a three-dimensional battlefield — the Underhive is a vertical environment of multi-level platforms, walkways, ladders and bridges. Elevation matters: fighters on higher ground have tactical advantages, and pushing enemies off platforms is a legitimate (and satisfying) tactic.

Each fighter in your gang activates individually, spending their actions on movement, shooting, fighting in melee or taking cover. The Injury system is central to the game — fighters can be Pinned, Seriously Injured or taken Out of Action, and the rolls at the end of the game determine lasting consequences. The tension of hoping your best fighter survives their serious injury roll is uniquely Necromunda.

Campaign Play — The Heart of Necromunda

Necromunda is designed to be played as a campaign — a series of connected games where gangs develop, territory changes hands and individual fighters accumulate experience, skills and injuries over time. Between games, players manage their gang's finances, recruit new fighters, purchase equipment and tend to their wounded.

The ideal campaign group is 3–6 players, each running their own gang in a persistent league that develops over weeks or months. The combination of personal investment in your fighters, political alliances between gangs and the unpredictability of each battle creates an experience unlike any other in the hobby.

Necromunda vs Kill Team — What's the Difference?

Both are skirmish games set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe with small groups of fighters, but they feel very different. Kill Team is competitive and action-oriented — specialist operatives, 60–90 minute games, focused tactical decisions. Necromunda is narrative and campaign-driven — gangs develop over many games, fighters have permanent histories and the story of your gang unfolds across an entire season.

Kill Team is the better choice for players who want regular competitive games. Necromunda is the better choice for players who want a deep, ongoing narrative experience with emotional investment in their fighters. Many players enjoy both.

The Hobby Side — Painting Necromunda Gangs

Necromunda is one of the most rewarding painting projects in the hobby. Gang members are individuals — each has a name, a backstory and a place in the gang hierarchy — and painting them as individuals rather than uniform soldiers opens creative possibilities unavailable in army painting.

The Underhive aesthetic rewards weathering and grime — chipped paint, rust, mud, worn leather and improvised repairs all tell the story of fighters who have survived in a hostile environment. How many miniatures do I need to start Necromunda?
A standard starting gang has approximately 10–15 fighters. One gang box (typically containing 10–12 models) is enough to start your first campaign. The gang grows over time as you recruit new fighters with credits earned through successful games. Necromunda is one of the more financially accessible Warhammer games at the entry level — a gang box costs approximately €35–40.

Is Necromunda suitable for beginners?
Necromunda is more complex than Kill Team or Combat Patrol and works best for players with some miniature wargaming experience. If you're new to the hobby, we recommend starting with Kill Team first and graduating to Necromunda when you want a deeper campaign experience. That said, if the setting captivates you, the learning curve is well worth the investment.

How many players do I need for Necromunda?
Necromunda can be played with just two players, but it shines brightest in a campaign group of 3–6 players, each running their own gang. The political dynamics, alliances and rivalries that develop in a multi-player league create the game's most memorable moments. A two-player campaign is also fully viable and very rewarding.

Do I need lots of sourcebooks to play Necromunda?
The core rulebook and your gang's rules provide everything you need for your first campaign. Necromunda has an extensive library of sourcebooks that add new gangs, campaign types, hired guns and special rules — but these are expansions, not requirements. Start with the basics and add sourcebooks as your interest in the game grows.

Which gang is best for beginners?
House Goliath and House Escher are the most recommended starting gangs — both have straightforward rules, clear playstyles and excellent miniature ranges. Goliath rewards aggressive close-combat play; Escher rewards fast, mobile skirmishing. Both are excellent choices for players learning the game.
