Warhammer

Warhammer is a wargaming tabletop game with miniatures from Games Workshop, a company that specializes in producing miniatures and games. These games fall under the category of wargaming, which is a style of play where players use miniatures and maps to simulate combat situations. Warhammer has two main worlds: Warhammer 40000, set in the distant future and featuring elements of science fiction and fantasy, and Age of Sigmar, set in a fantasy world. Both worlds feature various factions, armies, and races that can clash in battles. This style of play is also called tabletop and is very popular among fans of miniature games and modeling.

Warhammer — The Complete Range at Colours of Warriors

Warhammer is the world's most popular miniature wargaming hobby, published by Games Workshop since 1983. It combines strategic tabletop gameplay with the creative satisfaction of assembling and painting highly detailed plastic miniatures — a hobby that rewards both the competitive player and the dedicated painter equally. At Colours of Warriors, we stock the complete Games Workshop range across all Warhammer systems: miniatures, starter sets, rulebooks, codexes, terrain and accessories.

We are a specialist hobby shop based in Pilsen, Czech Republic — one of the most comprehensively stocked Warhammer retailers in Central Europe. Visit us in store at Zbrojnická 116/2, open Monday to Friday 13:00–18:00, or order online with delivery across the Czech Republic and the EU.

The Warhammer Games — Which System Is Right for You?

Warhammer is not a single game but an ecosystem of related games set in interconnected universes. Each system has its own rules, scale and style of play — from grand army battles to intimate skirmishes to cooperative dungeon adventures. Here is a guide to the main systems we stock:

Warhammer 40,000 — the world's most popular miniature wargame, set in the grim darkness of the 41st millennium. Space Marines, Chaos forces, alien Xenos and the dying Imperium of Man battle for survival across a war-torn galaxy. The largest player community, the most extensive tutorial support and the broadest range of factions make 40k the natural starting point for most new players. Current edition: 10th edition (2023), with 11th edition announced for 2025.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar — the epic fantasy counterpart to 40k, set in the mythical Mortal Realms. Stormcast Eternals, Nighthaunt, Orruk Warclans, Skaven and dozens of other factions battle for control of eight magical realms. A dynamic, action-oriented ruleset with the Spearhead format offering the fastest entry into the game. Current edition: 4th edition (2024).

Kill Team — fast-paced skirmish game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Small teams of 6–12 specialist operatives clash in claustrophobic terrain in games that take 60–90 minutes. The most accessible entry point into the 40k hobby — minimal models, lower cost and deep tactical gameplay. Current edition: 3rd edition (2024, Hivestorm).

Warhammer: The Horus Heresy — the prequel to Warhammer 40,000, set during the great civil war of the Space Marine Legions in the 31st millennium. The richest lore in the Warhammer universe, with 18 playable Legions and a rules system designed for narrative and competitive play. Recommended for players with some wargaming experience.

Legions Imperialis — epic-scale Horus Heresy battles using 8mm miniatures. Entire tank battalions, infantry regiments and Titan war machines clash across vast battlefields. A standalone game with its own rules, separate from standard Horus Heresy.

Warhammer: The Old World — the return of classic fantasy Warhammer with square bases and formation battles. Set in the World of Legend 1,000 years before the End Times, featuring Kingdom of Bretonnia, Empire of Man, Tomb Kings of Khemri, Warriors of Chaos, Grand Cathay and more. Old Warhammer Fantasy Battles miniatures are fully compatible.

Necromunda — gang warfare in the industrial underhive of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. A campaign-driven skirmish game where gangs develop over many sessions, fighters gain experience, suffer permanent injuries and die. The deepest narrative experience in the Warhammer range.

Warcry — fast-paced warband skirmish set in the Age of Sigmar Mortal Realms. 6–15 fighters, card-driven mission variety and a rich campaign system. An excellent companion game for Age of Sigmar players — existing AoS miniatures can be used immediately via the Warcry Compendium.

Warhammer Underworlds — competitive miniature card game set in the Age of Sigmar universe. Small warbands of 3–6 fighters clash in hex-based arenas while players manage hands of power and objective cards. The fastest Warhammer game at 30–45 minutes, with a thriving competitive scene.

Blood Bowl — darkly comic fantasy American football, set in an alternate Warhammer world. Two players coach teams of fantasy athletes across a gridded pitch, scoring touchdowns while causing maximum mayhem. An excellent entry point for players who prefer focused two-player competitive games with a rich league system.

Warhammer Quest — cooperative dungeon crawler for 1–4 players, set in the Age of Sigmar universe. Players work together against enemies controlled by the game, exploring dangerous locations and unfolding a narrative campaign. The only major Warhammer game with full solo support.

How to Choose — A Quick Guide

I want to start Warhammer for the first time — start with Kill Team (fewest models, fastest games, lowest cost) or a Warhammer 40k Combat Patrol if you're drawn to the 40k universe. See our complete beginner's guide.

The Hobby — Assembling and Painting

Every Warhammer miniature comes unassembled on plastic sprues. You'll need clippers to remove parts from the frame and plastic glue to assemble them. Once built, most players apply a spray primer before painting with acrylic paints.

The standard painting approach follows three steps: Base (solid foundation colour), Shade (thin wash flowing into recesses) and Layer (highlight raised surfaces). This method produces excellent results at any skill level and is thoroughly documented across thousands of free tutorials online.

We stock a complete range of hobby supplies — paints from Citadel, Vallejo, Army Painter, Scale75 and 17 other brands, brushes from 14 brands, modelling tools and basing materials. For paint recommendations, see our paint comparison guide.

Frequently Asked Questions — Warhammer

What is Warhammer and how do I start?
Warhammer is a tabletop miniature wargame published by Games Workshop — you assemble and paint detailed plastic miniatures, then play strategic battles against other players. To start, choose a system (most beginners start with Warhammer 40,000 or Kill Team), pick up a starter set and a basic paint kit. Our beginner's guide walks you through every step.

Which Warhammer game is best for beginners?
Kill Team requires the fewest models (6–12 per side), costs the least to start and plays in 60–90 minutes — making it the most accessible entry point. For players who want army-scale battles immediately, a Warhammer 40k Combat Patrol or Age of Sigmar Spearhead box is the next step up.

How much does it cost to start Warhammer?
A complete starter package including miniatures, paints, brushes and tools typically costs €100–160 depending on the system. Kill Team and Age of Sigmar Spearhead are the most affordable entry points; Horus Heresy is the most expensive. See our full cost breakdown: How much does it cost to start Warhammer?

What is the difference between Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar?
Warhammer 40,000 is science fiction — Space Marines, alien Xenos and Chaos forces in the 41st millennium. Age of Sigmar is high fantasy — gods, dragons and mythical warriors in the Mortal Realms. Both use round bases and share a similar rules structure, but the aesthetics, lore and factions are completely different. Many players collect both.

Do I need to paint my miniatures to play?
No — you can play with assembled but unpainted miniatures. Most players choose to paint because it adds significantly to the visual experience and the creative satisfaction of the hobby. Our painting guide for beginners covers everything you need to know to start painting.

Where can I buy Warhammer in the Czech Republic?
At Colours of Warriors — either online at coloursofwarriors.com with delivery across the Czech Republic and EU, or in person at our store in Pilsen at Zbrojnická 116/2, open Monday to Friday 13:00–18:00. We stock the complete Games Workshop range including products that may be harder to find at general retailers.
