Base and Diorama — Complete Basing Supplies

The base is the foundation of every miniature — it provides context, atmosphere and the final detail that transforms a painted figure into a complete scene. At Colours of Warriors, we stock one of the most comprehensive selections of basing and diorama materials available in the Czech Republic: 759 products from 13 brands covering texture pastes, static grass, tufts, rocks, sand, water effects, putty, display bases and construction materials for everything from quick tabletop bases to elaborate competition dioramas.

Visit our store in Pilsen, Czech Republic, or order online with delivery across the EU.

Texture Pastes — The Fastest Way to Base

Texture pastes are thick, ready-to-use basing materials that apply directly to the base with an old brush or sculpting tool — no mixing, no preparation. After drying they can be painted, drybrushed and detailed to create any terrain type. The fastest method for basing large armies consistently.

We stock texture pastes from three major ranges:

Citadel Technical Texture Paints — the most popular range for Warhammer painters, with iconic products like Armageddon Dust (desert terrain), Stirland Mud (muddy ground), Astrogranite (rocky urban terrain), Valhallan Blizzard (snow) and Agrellan Earth (cracked dry earth). Apply thickly and drybrush after drying for instant results.

AK Interactive Terrain Pastes — a wide range of themed pastes including Dark Earth, Muddy Ground, Plague Ground, Fire Land, Bloody Land, Sorcery Ground, Asphalt, Concrete and many more. Excellent coverage and a variety of textures for any setting.

Green Stuff World Texture Pastes — including specialist fantasy and sci-fi themed pastes for unique basing effects not available in other ranges.

Tufts and Static Grass

Tufts and static grass are the finishing touch that brings natural bases to life — small pre-made clumps of grass and foliage that glue directly onto completed bases. The difference between a base with and without tufts is immediate and dramatic.

Our largest range comes from Gamers Grass — 116 products including tufts in every colour, height and style: summer green, dead brown, winter white, alien purple, jungle dark, swamp mixed and many more. Gamers Grass tufts are self-adhesive — peel and stick directly onto the base without needing PVA glue.

We also stock tufts and grass products from Army Painter and static grass applicators for those who want to apply loose fibres for a more natural standing effect.

Rocks, Sands and Natural Materials

Rocks and sands — natural scatter materials that add texture and depth to bases at minimal cost. We stock a wide range of sands in different grain sizes and colours, decorative rocks, gravel and crushed stone from Army Painter, Green Stuff World and AK Interactive.

The Army Painter Brown Battleground is our bestselling scatter material — a fine brown sand ideal as a base layer for almost any terrain theme before adding detail materials on top.

Water Effects — Puddles, Rivers and Seas

Realistic water effects are one of the most striking basing techniques and one of the most accessible once you have the right products. We stock several approaches:

Still Water — AK Interactive's Still Water paste creates convincing flat water surfaces — puddles, swamps, shallow pools. Apply in thin layers and allow each to dry before adding the next. One of our bestselling individual basing products.

Water effects pastes — Puddles, Wet Ground and similar products from AK Interactive and Green Stuff World create the appearance of standing water without the transparency of resin effects.

Vallejo Diorama Effects — Vallejo's Diorama Effects range includes still water, water texture for waves and currents, mud and foam effects for waterscapes. Available in our Vallejo section.

Objects and Add-Ons — Detail and Character

Objects and add-ons are the small details that give bases individual character — skulls, barrels, crates, bones, chains, candles, bottles, discarded weapons and other scatter pieces that tell a story about the environment your miniature inhabits.

Our bestselling object is the Green Stuff World Human Skulls Resin Set — a bag of tiny resin skulls compatible with Warhammer basing and an instantly recognisable detail for 40k, AoS and Fantasy bases.

We also stock AK Interactive resin lenses in sizes from 1mm to 5mm — perfect for vehicle headlights, weapon scopes and OSL (Object Source Lighting) effects on miniatures.

Putty and Sculpting Materials

Putty and sculpting materials are used for gap filling after assembly, converting miniatures and sculpting custom base details and diorama elements from scratch.

Milliput — our bestselling two-part epoxy putty, available in Standard Yellow-Grey and Super Fine White. Milliput cures rock hard, is sandable and paintable, and is the most widely used putty for gap filling and base sculpting. The Super Fine White variant is preferred for detail work where smooth surfaces are required.

Green Stuff (Kneadatite) — the classic blue/yellow two-part epoxy putty used by professional sculptors and converters. Remains workable for longer than Milliput before curing and holds fine texture detail exceptionally well. Available from Green Stuff World.

AK Interactive Modeling Putty — acrylic grey and white putties for gap filling and surface smoothing, air-drying and water-soluble for easy cleanup.

Display Bases — For Competition and Exhibition

Display bases are wooden, resin or acrylic bases designed to present single miniatures or dioramas for competition, exhibition or photography. They provide a polished, professional appearance that enhances any showcase piece.

We stock display bases from Scale75 and other suppliers in a range of shapes, sizes and finishes — round, oval, square and rectangular in natural wood, painted black and clear acrylic variants. Essential for painters who enter painting competitions or want to display hero models prominently.

Construction Materials — Building Terrain and Dioramas

Construction materials — foams, cork sheets, balsa wood, bricks and architectural elements for scratch-building terrain, scatter pieces and elaborate diorama environments. Essential for hobbyists who want to build their own gaming terrain or create complex scenic bases beyond what pre-made products offer.

Texture Roll Pins — Green Stuff World's range of textured rolling pins for pressing patterns into putty and clay. Cobblestone, brick, wood, flagstone, scale mail and many more patterns available for creating repeating textures on bases and terrain quickly and consistently.

Basing Tips — Getting the Best Results

The standard basing workflow for tabletop miniatures follows a simple sequence: apply texture paste or PVA with sand → paint the base (often a dark brown or grey) → drybrush a lighter tone to pick out texture → add tufts and scatter materials → seal with matte varnish. This process takes 10–15 minutes per base once the materials are dry.

For Citadel texture paints, apply the paste generously — it shrinks slightly as it dries. A single coat followed by drybrushing is enough for excellent tabletop results. Thin layers produce the best cracked earth effects with Agrellan Earth and similar products.

Tufts should go on last, after all painting and varnishing is complete — they are not heat resistant and should not go through any spray varnish process after application.

Frequently Asked Questions — Base and Diorama

What is the easiest way to base Warhammer miniatures?
Citadel Technical texture paints are the fastest and most beginner-friendly basing method — apply directly from the pot with an old brush, allow to dry and drybrush a lighter colour over the top. Products like Armageddon Dust, Stirland Mud and Astrogranite Debris each produce a specific terrain type in a single step.

What is the difference between Milliput and Green Stuff?
Both are two-part epoxy putties, but they behave differently. Milliput is harder when cured, sandable and excellent for gap filling and rock sculpting on bases. Green Stuff remains slightly flexible when cured and holds fine detail better — preferred for sculpting organic shapes, clothing folds and conversion work. Many hobbyists use both: Milliput for structural work, Green Stuff for detail.

How do I add water effects to my bases?
For simple puddles and shallow water, AK Interactive Still Water paste is the easiest option — apply in thin layers (2–3mm maximum per layer) into a sealed base area and allow each layer to dry before adding the next. For deeper water effects, two-part resin products achieve greater depth and transparency but require more preparation and a perfectly sealed base to prevent leaking.

When should I add tufts to my bases?
Always last — after all painting, washes and varnishing are complete. Tufts are not heat resistant and cannot be sprayed with aerosol varnish after application. Gamers Grass self-adhesive tufts simply peel off the backing sheet and press onto the base without any additional glue needed.

What are texture roll pins used for?
Texture roll pins from Green Stuff World are used to press repeating patterns into soft putty or air-dry clay — cobblestone streets, stone flags, brick walls, wood planking and many other textures. Roll the pin firmly over freshly applied Green Stuff or similar putty to transfer the pattern. An excellent tool for creating scenic bases and terrain quickly with a professional finish.

Do I need a display base for competition painting?
Most painting competitions require or strongly recommend a display base for single miniature and diorama categories — it presents the piece at the correct viewing height and provides a professional frame for the work. Display bases in natural wood and black painted finishes are the most commonly accepted at competitions across Europe.
